In Year 5, two years ahead of the normal educational pattern, children begin subject specialist learning. In other words, they have a different, specialist teacher for each subject, and are taught in a specially resourced room. Nonetheless, the children's pastoral care remains a high priority, and every child is assigned to a form and a form teacher. They meet every morning to check on progress, and special meetings are arranged as necessary. As children mature they are challenged to grow in independence and establish a greater responsibility for their own learning.

All children are prepared for the Key Stage Two SATs at the end of Year 6 (see Results), but their importance is kept in perspective. The curriculum remains broad and balanced throughout this time, including English, Maths, Science and Information Technology (ICT); French and Latin; History, Geography and Religious Education (RE); Music, Drama, Art and Design; Games and Physical Education (PE); and Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE).

There are regular opportunites for parents to meet with teachers, and written reports are provided twice per year. Those with learning needs are assisted either in the classroom or through special small group (or one to one) lessons in the Learning Support Department. Good work and effort is rewarded with House Points and Headmaster's Gold Awards, and once a year at Speech Day & Prize Giving the highest achievers are more formally recognised.
