ImageEach child is encouraged to observe reflectively, think effectively, discuss confidently, respond creatively, concentrate and persevere, and work independently and harmoniously in a group. Importance is placed on the development of the basic skills, reading, writing and number. However, the children have a broad curriculum, including plenty of physical activity, French from Year 1, trips outside school, and good opportunites for music, drama and dance.

The main reading scheme is Ginn 360 but supplementary material from other schemes is used, as well as a large library of picture, story and information books. Children are introduced to the sounds of the alphabet and later to the letter blends through the Jolly Phonics programme.

Children learn to write by tracing over letter shapes with their finger and pencil, and as more accurate letter formation develops they are able to copy underneath an adult's writing. The next step is reached when they learn to write independently, with the help of their own personal word dictionary and their developing phonic skills.

New Heinemann Maths, which takes the children right through the Junior School and in to the Middle School, is our primary numeracy scheme.

Some work at home is essential and extremely beneficial to the child. During the first years at School this is normally limited to reading and phonic work, while Years 1 and 2 have spellings to learn once a week in addition to their reading and Home Activities for Numeracy.

Pupils attend each day from Monday to Friday. They are brought to Longdon Green between 08:40 and 08:55, although provision can be made through the Early Birds Club for earlier drop-offs. Collection times vary between 15:00 and 15:30 according to age. An After-School (Owls) Club runs between 15:00 and 18:00. Arrangements may also be made for siblings to be transported to and from the Lichfield site.

Children's progress will be recorded regularly and discussed with parents at Parents' Consultation Evenings or whenever there is a need. Written reports are produced twice during the year and samples of the best work created during the year are published in the school magazine.
