Lichfield Cathedral School is preparing to mark a milestone in its history at the end of this academic year. Instead of leaving at age 13, pupils are now being given the opportunity to stay on at the School through to GCSE’s and beyond. It’s not only Cathedral School pupils who are benefiting: many boys and girls from the area are joining the School at age 11 or 13, knowing that they will have the opportunity to share in this exciting enterprise. There is a sense of considered confidence in the School. The Headmaster, Peter Allwood, said, “We are seeking to build on our current track record for high achievement within a broad and varied curriculum. Our main aim is to produce mature, confident and articulate young people who have a broad range of skills and display a sense of responsibility and leadership which will prepare them for their lives beyond school.” “With our youngest pupils now happily accommodated in the former St John’s School in Longdon Green, we can turn our full attention to the creation of new academic facilities and departments within the historic setting of the Cathedral Close. The first priority for buildings is to complement our current Science facility with three newly equipped labs for Physics, Chemistry and Biology.” There is a swift expansion of activities for all pupils, such as a developing Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and a strong emphasis on action within the Community. The School works closely with the Cathedral in upholding strong Christian values, but welcomes children of all faiths and backgrounds. The boys are particularly enthusiastic about the recent introduction of Rugby as their winter sport. At the same time, many girls have now joined the centuries old tradition for choral excellence in Lichfield by forming a specialist girls’ choir. Their inaugural concert took place in the Cathedral in December. As well as academic scholarships being available, children can also gain scholarships for the boys’ Cathedral choir, the new Girls’ Choir, sport, music, art/design and drama. |
