Lichfield Cathedral School’s new specialist Girls’ Choir led the worship for the first time at Choral Evensong in the Cathedral on Wednesday last week.

Many girls have sung in the Cathedral before, but this is the first time that Lichfield’s own home-grown girls’ choir has provided the music for Evensong, and they are hoping to contribute a great deal more in the future.

In front of a full and appreciative congregation, the girls sang music to mark the end of Epiphany, including responses composed by Ian Fox, a setting of the Magnificat by Mark Blatchley and the beautiful Anthem, ‘Brightest and Best’, by Malcolm Archer, the organist at St. Paul’s Cathedral.

Alex Mason, Assistant Organist at the Cathedral and Musical Director of the Girls’ Choir, said “We were delighted with the way the girls sang at Evensong.  They have only been together as a choir since September and to have already been invited to sing their first Evensong is a great honour.  The boy choristers have been singing Evensong in the Cathedral for hundreds of years, so for the girls to sing their first one has been quite an historic occasion.

“I chose these particular pieces of music as two of the composers, Mark Blatchley and Ian Fox are both former teachers of mine and the Malcolm Archer anthem is such fun for the girls to sing.  We are really looking forward to singing in more services in the Cathedral in the future and have many concerts to look forward to in the coming months, including one in Birmingham Cathedral in March.”
