In addition to class music lessons, many pupils receive individual tuition in a variety of musical instruments taught by a large team of visiting music teachers. Pupils work towards grade examinations, both in practical and theory, of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Instrumental tuition is, of course, an entirely optional activity, except for the choristers who are expected to learn two instruments. Many opportunities are provided during the year for individuals or groups to perform and these take place in the school, in the cathedral or at external venues. In recent years instrumental ensembles have enjoyed tours in Germany and Holland. Choral Scholarships are available for singers joining the specialist Girls' Choir as well as for young boys wishing to become choristers in the Cathedral Choir.
