Music LessonNot surprisingly, music is an area in which the School excels, with a wide range of activity including the internationally renowned Cathedral Choristers but also the introduction in September 2006 of a new specialist choir for girls.

In addition to class music lessons, many pupils receive individual tuition - we deliver 360 lessons each week in a variety of musical instruments taught by a large team of visiting music teachers. Pupils work towards grade examinations, both in practical and theory, of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Instrumental tuition is, of course, an entirely optional activity, except for the choristers who are expected to learn two instruments.

There is a flourishing School Concert Orchestra, five additional choirs (Cantabile, Junior and Senior Encore, Vibe and the Palace Singers) a Wind Band and Wind Ensemble, Junior and Senior Brass Ensemble, Junior and Senior Strings, Recorder Ensemble, Trombone Choir, Jazz Group and Drum Corps. With over 60 concerts and events a year, there are many opportunities for individuals or groups to perform and these take place in the School, in the Cathedral and at external venues. In recent years instrumental ensembles have enjoyed tours in Germany and Holland.

Choral Scholarships are available for singers joining the specialist Girls' Choir as well as for young boys wishing to become choristers in the Cathedral Choir. Music Scholarships are available from Year 7 for both internal and external candidates.
