The addition of a six acre site at Longdon Green, with its beautifully maintained, purpose-built classrooms and high quality educational facilities and resources, provides a natural home for the children of the Junior School (aged 3-8). Parents of the youngest children appreciate the opportunity to park their car and take their child into school, to know that it is a secure and safe environment where regular communication with the teacher is easy. The Cathedral School Nursery has fully qualified, specialist Early Years teachers with a team of committed assistants. There are two Reception classes on the ground floor of the main building, connected to the Nursery as the Early Years Foundation Stage, while Years 1 and 2 are taught on the first floor of the main building, and Year 3 have their own new classrooms above the main Hall. In addition to the class teacher, each class has its own full-time classroom assistant. The Cathedral Close provides an inspirational setting for the education of older pupils, with the emphasis shifting to greater independence of mind and spirit, and the depth and diversity of learning. Children in Year 4 continue to be taught as a form but with increased input from specialist teachers. From Year 5, pupils begin subject specialist learning, two years ahead of the normal educational pattern. Though located on two sites, the Cathedral School remains a unified school. As they get older, the children based at Longdon enjoy increasing involvement with the Cathedral and join the older children for significant occasions and events, whilst many of the teachers based at Lichfield also teach at Longdon. |
