Drama productions take place in school and in venues across Lichfield including Lichfield Cathedral and The Coton Centre in Tamworth. The school has a thriving partnership with the Lichfield Garrick Theatre. In 2004, the School presented its first production in the Studio, Bugsy Malone. In 2006, we hired the full theatre for a major production of Aladdin with a cast of over 100 children including every pupil in Years 5-8. In 2007, the School put on a production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe in the Studio Theatre and in June 2009 we returned to the main auditorium of the Garrick for a full scale production of Return to the Forbidden Planet, which is Shakespeare's Tempest enacted in space with 1950s Rock and Roll favourites. In March 2010, senior students performed Blood Brothers at the Garrick Studio as part of their GCSE in Drama. In March 2011, senior pupils performed the world premier of You, Me & Yesterday, a musical journey through the life of famed socialite and social radical, Nancy Cunard. In June 2011, pupils from Year 6 to Sixth Form performed an amazing version of Grease the main Garrick auditorium. In addition to using the Garrick as a performance space, LCS pupils benefit from the expertise and experience of Garrick staff in their academic studies. GCSE Drama and A Level students in Performing Arts and Theatre Studies are able to explore different aspects of the syllabus with Garrick staff (e.g. marketing, stage management, set design). Dance is taught in the Junior School and as a club for Years 3&4, and continues throughout the School to feature strongly in productions. |
Drama and dance help children to grow in confidence, developing communication skills and creative expression. There are opportunities to take part beyond the classroom, both within each year group and in major School productions. Many enjoy backstage crafts, and regular theatre visits are very popular.
