Children's Book Week 4th - 8th October 2010
Wednesday, 08 September 2010

LCS will be celebrating National Children’s Book Week from the 4th to the 8th of October 2010.

Children's Book Week is a celebration of reading for pleasure. Schools, libraries and bookshops all over the UK hold events and activities aimed at encouraging children to view reading as a source of pleasure, explore libraries and bookshops and even start writing themselves.

Focusing on book-related activities can help children to see reading as pleasurable and fun, stimulating them to discover new books, extend their reading choices, discuss and share books, explore libraries and bookshops, and do their own creative writing.

Mrs Price, the School Librarian, has organised a Book Fair featuring books for pupils aged from 7 years old to 16+, which will be held in the Old Library in the Palace from 4.25pm to 5.30pm throughout Book Week.

A range of fiction and non-fiction books, each one chosen specifically for LCS pupils, will be available at a discounted rate. Please come along and support Children's Book Week.

At the Junior School in Longdon, Tuesday 5th October will be Roald Dahl Day. Every child is invited to come to School dressed as a character from a Roald Dahl book to raise money for Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity. Also, scrummdidlyumptious cakes will be on sale for 50p each!

GCSE results success
Wednesday, 08 September 2010

We are delighted with the recent GCSE results achieved by LCS students. A fantastic 88% of students achieved at least 5 A* to C grades including English and Mathematics.

Headmaster, Peter Allwood, said: "As a non-selective school, we are extremely proud of the students' academic achievements and thrilled that their enthusiasm, commitment and hard work have been rewarded by these excellent grades."

The students achieved a 100% pass rate and almost 30% of grades were A* or A.

"Students at every level of ability have worked hard to achieve at or above their own personal targets and, as a result, they are now able to move on with confidence to the next step, be that in formal education in our new Sixth Form or a further education college or in employment with training," said Susan Hannam, Deputy Head.

On average, the success rate at grades A* to C was 20% higher than would be expected based purely on baseline cognitive testing, which clearly demonstrates the value added by the high quality teaching, supportive environment and small class sizes.

"It is a set of strong results in the traditional, more demanding academic subjects, showing that Lichfield Cathedral School is successfully preparing its students for the challenge of A Level and beyond," added Mrs Hannam.

Mr Allwood continued: "These excellent results mark the culmination of a fantastic year for Lichfield Cathedral School. The outstanding inspection report we received in May was a testament to the hard work of staff and pupils in creating and maintaining an educational environment which nurtures, nourishes and stimulates youngs minds and talents. I am delighted with these excellent GCSE results and my warmest congratulations go to the students, their families and their teachers."

Anne Boleyn visit to LCS
Thursday, 04 March 2010

On Thursday 18 March 2010, we were delighted that Lesley Smith, eminent historian and Curator of Tutbury Castle, become Anne Boleyn for the evening.

As part of the St. Chad's Youth Lecture Series, Lesley delivered an extraordinary performance telling the entralling tale of Anne, who for centuries has been portrayed as a cunning and manipulative woman responsible for causing the bloody aspects of the Reformation.

In truth, Anne was a highly educated, profoundly religious person who cared deeply about her moral standing. In this portrayal of Anne, Lesley appeared in Anne's execution gown during the last 45 minutes of her life in the Tower.

Lesley kept the audience entranced in an atmospheric, candle-lit Great Hall. It was a wonderful evening and a fantastic way of bringing history to life.

Julian Lloyd Webber Masterclass
Thursday, 04 March 2010

Pupils aged between 6 and 16 from Lichfield Cathedral School were delighted to take part in a masterclass by world-famous cellist Julian Lloyd Webber on Wednesday 3rd March 2010.

Sixty Lichfield Cathedral School students were joined by 30 pupils and teachers from local schools to hear Julian share some insider secrets on improving performance.

The masterclass focused around three Lichfield Cathedral School string players: Charlotte Howdle, aged 9 who plays Grade 5 violin; Ciara Bryan, aged 11 who plays Grade 4 cello; and Kathryn McIntosh, aged 15, who plays Grade 5 cello and is currently studying GCSE Music. All three girls play in the School’s Concert Orchestra.

“Julian is a passionate champion of classical music education and string playing in particular. His informal and friendly approach created a relaxed atmosphere, and the pupils really responded to his warm enthusiasm”, said Nick Parrans-Smith, Director of Music at Lichfield Cathedral School. “We were honoured that Julian took time out of his incredibly busy schedule to join us at the School. The pupils learned specific techniques to refine their performance, and gained invaluable advice from a world-renowned performer on developing music as a career.”

“Hopefully the pupils will put what they have learned to good use and remember that, even today, Mr Lloyd Webber practices for 4 hours every day!”

Founders' Day Celebration 26 January
Saturday, 16 January 2010

On Tuesday 26th January, we celebrate the day on which our School was re-founded.  Although there had been a school to provide for the education of choristers for many centuries, in 1935 the Dean of the Cathedral and Chapter realised that the reorganisation of the school was essential.
