Children are admitted into Reception from the September following their fourth birthday and will continue full-time if they come from the school's nursery class. Alternatively, they may start by attending only for the morning for the first two weeks if this is their first experience of school. When it is considered advisable, the child will stay for lunch and a short play before going home. The progression to full time attendance usually follows quite quickly after this. Children are accepted into the Early Years in strict chronological order of application. Children frequently join the school in Years 3-6. There is a simple assessment taken at school before the offer of a place is made, and children often spend a day in school to become acclimatised before a final decision is made. Registrations will not be confirmed for children over the compulsory school age (i.e. over 5) for any more than one year in advance of their entry. Many parents send their child to the Cathedral School because the small class sizes and additional in-class support provide a high adult:pupil ratio and individual needs can be met. The school seeks wherever possible to have no more than 20 children in any one class. Pupils wishing to enter Year 7 for Secondary Education or Year 10 to start GCSEs take an Entrance Examination in the February prior to entry in September, but potential candidates are advised to contact the school as early as possible and to visit for a tour and an experience day. Our offer of places into the Sixth Form is conditional upon achieving a minimum of 5 GCSEs (grades A* to C). Individual subject requirements may also apply.
